Addressing Misinformation on Social Media: Urgent Legislation Needed, Says Police Commissioner

Top cop calls for laws

In a recent press briefing, Police
Commissioner, Major General Antony Anderson, emphasized the pressing need for specialized
legislation to combat the alarming rise of misinformation spread through social media.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force’s (JCF) social media campaigns have proven effective in gathering
information and capturing criminals. However, Anderson expressed concern over malicious individuals
exploiting these platforms to sow fear and chaos.

Â

One specific incident in early June exemplified the severity of the issue. A man on TikTok issued a bomb threat at a gas station in Ocho Rios, St Ann, leading to significant deployment of law enforcement resources, road closures, and business evacuations. Ultimately, the perpetrator, a 25-year-old, confessed it was a prank and faced charges under the Cyber Crimes Act, pending sentencing.

Â

The challenges faced by the JCF are not isolated incidents. Misleading content intentionally created to obstruct police investigations and manipulated videos falsely depicting events in Jamaica have become more frequent, causing both local fear and a negative international impact.

Â

To address this ever-evolving digital landscape, Anderson stressed the urgency of enacting legislation that defines new offences related to social media, artificial intelligence, deep fakes, and broader cyberspace usage. The proposed measures include introducing offences such as digital public mischief and more severe violations.

Â

While awaiting legislative changes, the Commissioner urged the public to use digital platforms responsibly. Reporting incidents officially and providing information through authorized channels, such as crime victims and witnesses, will ensure the proper resolution of matters and contribute to a safer digital environment.
